Funeral services for Mrs. Esther Monson, long-time Winneshiek County resident, were held Saturday, Feb. 10 at Steine Funeral Home. Mrs. Monson died February 6 in Chicago where she made her home the past seven years. She was 83.
Mrs. Monson, the former Esther Peterson, was born April 20, 1889 in Winneshiek County. She received her education at schools in Freeport and Valders Business College in Decorah and she taught in the rural schools of the County for several years.
Rev. Ward Stephenson conducted services at the funeral home and burial in Phelps Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roland Lillegraven, Wendell Lillegraven, Marvin Iverson, Orlando Tovson, Dan Gabrielson and Denton Marsh. Mrs. Otto Ruen was organist.
Mrs. Monson is survived by a son, Clinton Monson of Decorah; two daughters, Mrs. Lonnie (Mildred) Hinds of Arlington Heights, Ill. and Irene Davidson of Chicago; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Peterson, her husband, Lewis Monson who she married August 31, 1908, and a son, Gordon, who died in early childhood.
