THE SILENT REAPER.
Two deaths occurred in Decorah last Friday, within a few hours of each other—Mrs. Elizabeth S. Broghammer and Mrs. Sarah G. Shaw.
Mrs. Broghammer’s death followed an illness of about two weeks, and was due largely to the infirmities of old age. She was one of the pioneers of the county and enjoyed the respect of many acquaintances. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Stortz and she was born Nov. 14, 1825, in Wurtemberg, Germany. She came to America in 1848 and located at Racine, Wis., where she was married on February 19, 1849, to Simon Broghammer. They continued to reside at Racine until 1857 when they came to Iowa and located on the farm north of Decorah, where for many years their cordial hospitality and sterling worth formed the basis of sincere friendships among all who knew them. To them was accorded the privilege of celebrating over fifty years of married life, the golden anniversary being celebrated in 1899. Mr. Broghammer passed away several years ago. The surviving children are Mrs. Geo. Stoskopf of Wild Rose, N. D., John, Charles, Mike and Frank, Mrs. Lawrence Stortz and Mrs. Elizabeth Oehler, who resides near Decorah. The funeral was held Tuesday at St. Benedict’s church, and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in St. Benedict Cemetery shows she died Jan. 16, 1914.
