AGED WOMAN FOUND DEAD.
Mrs. Michael Coughlin of Ossian Found Dead in Bed.
The people of Ossian were startled last week Thursday morning when they learned that Mrs. Michael Coughlin had been found dead in bed at her home in that village. Mrs. Coughlin was the widow of Michael Coughlin, formerly well known in Decorah, who for many years was a shoemaker in a shop on East Water street. Some years ago Mrs. Coughlin purchased a little home in Ossian and moved there, living most of the time alone. Last week Monday, Mrs. Webster Rosa, her daughter, came to see her and noticing that she did not appear to be as well as usual asked after her health. Mrs. Coughlin said she did feel very well and Mrs. Rosa told her she would go home and finish up her work and come back and stay with her. She returned Wednesday afternoon, finding Mrs. Coughlin feeling no better. Wednesday night she retired and Mrs. Rosa says that she heard her moving about her room several times during the night, consequently apprehended no danger. Thursday morning soon after 7 o’clock Mrs. Rosa went into her mother’s room to see how she was and found her lying on the bed with life extinct. At just what hour she died is not known but death was evidently quiet and without great pain. The immediate cause of death is designated as asthma of the heart. The funeral was held last Monday morning at St. Benedict’s church, Decorah, with Fathers Hawe, Mullen and Thiltgen of Ossian officiating. Mrs. Coughlin was one of the early residents of Decorah and it was here all of her children were born. Surviving her are her daughters Mrs. Webster Rosa, living near Ossian, Mrs. K. Hirschman of Spokane, Washington, Mrs. Chas. Miller of Minneapolis, and a daughter whose given name is Mary who could not be located, and a son, Frank Coughlin of Minneapolis. Mrs. Coughlin’s maiden name was Johanna Casey and she was born in Ireland about 72 years ago. She was a devout member of the Catholic church and a woman who was highly respected by every one who knew her.
