THE SILENT REAPER.
Four Old Residents of Winneshiek Called to Their Reward The Past Week.
John F. Harmon, a resident of Decorah since 1851, died Thursday, July 27, at the Soldiers’ Home of Marshalltown, after an illness of five days. The remains were brought to Decorah and on Saturday morning the funeral service was held at St. Benedict’s church, interment being made in the Catholic cemetery.
John Fox Harmon was born July 19, 1842, in Pendleton county, Kentucky. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1851 where his home has since been maintained, with the exception of short periods spent in the lumber camps in Northern Wisconsin. When the call for troops came in 1861 he enlisted in Company D, 3rd Iowa Infantry, and it was his privilege to carry out of Decorah the flag that was presented by the ladies of the city to that company. Fifty years later on Memorial Day he again carried the same flag in the Memorial day parade. His service in the army covered four years, as he reinlisted and served in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth corps. He participated in Sherman’s march to the sea, being a wagon master in the Seventeenth corps. Mr. Harmon was twice married, his first wife being Mary E. Haley of Ithaca, N. Y., who survived about a year. His second wife was Irene Zimmerman of Eau Claire, Wis., who passed away some years ago. Mr. Harmon was a man of very genial temperament, possessed with the happy ability to see the brighter things of life. Besides his brothers, Dr. B. Harmon and M. A. Harmon, and his sisters Mrs. P. Keefe and Mrs. R. Madden, his brother Joseph Harmon of Superior, Wis., was also present at the funeral.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he died July 24, 1913 which agrees with being a Thursday.
