A SORROWFUL TRAGEDY.
E. C. Johnson, Formerly of Hesper, Iowa, Drowned in Heart River Near Mandan, N. D.
Rumor was current in Decorah early last week that Edwin C. Johnson, well known to many people in Hesper as the foster son of Rev. and Mrs. H. C. Carter, had been drowned in the Heart river near Mandan, N. D., on the 5th inst. Neither confirmation nor particulars could be secured at that time, but a clipping from the Mandan News of the 12th inst. Gives the details of the tragedy.
It seems that on the morning in question, Mr. Johnson had gone to the river on a horse, intending to cross and look after a bunch of horses that he owned. Shortly after Mrs. Johnson looking from her kitchen window saw the horse on the opposite bank, standing alone. Fearing that her husband had been swept away in the flood water of the river she ran to a neighbor to give an alarm. Examination indicated that Mr. Johnson had dismounted from his horse and in attempting to mount again the horse becoming excited, had thrown him into the water. Every endeavor to recover the body has proved fruitless. Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Fawcett, former residents of Highland township, and a granddaughter of Ogden Casterton of Decorah. Great sympathy is felt for her and her two little children in their bereavement.Source: Decorah Republican Apr. 18, 1912 P6 C4
After aiding for three days in the search for the body of his foster son Edwin C. Johnson, drowned in the Heart river near Mandan, N. D., H. C. Carter returned home on Thursday. Their human wisdom and ingenuity were exhausted by the searchers; and the conviction settled upon them that further search would be futile until the high, muddy, seething waters of that peculiarly treacherous river shall have gone down. The ablest citizens there are keeping watch, and will use all means practicable to find the body. Mr. and Mrs. Fawcett will remain there until the property affairs shall have been adjusted. Then Mrs. Johnson and the children will accompany them home and locate near them in Mabel.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1877 and is buried in the Hesper Public Cemetery.
