Timothy “Tim” James Broderick, 63, of Decorah passed away on August 23rd, 2023, surrounded by his family at Methodist Hospital at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN due to complications from metastatic esophageal cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at St. Benedict Catholic Church 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding.
Visiation will be Friday, September 1, 2023, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home, 306 East Water St., Decorah, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church Saturday morning.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. All donations will go to a scholarship fund in Tim’s name.
Tim was born on April 12, 1960, to William “Bill” and Alice Broderick in Decorah, IA. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1978. As a kid and adult, he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his dad and brother, Terry.
After high school, Tim worked at Coast to Coast and Lang’s Dairy, but he spent most of his professional career as a Service Manager for RACOM Corporation where he designed, installed, and maintained critical emergency dispatch and land mobile radio communications systems for first responders all over Iowa and the western United States. He affectionately called his job as being “the 911 to the 911…” He was loved by co-workers and customers alike for his technical knowledge and tenacity at staying with a problem until it was resolved. Everyone trusted Tim because he had the special ability to break down complex issues in simple, understandable ways and patiently explain them.
Tim married Sue Hageman on July 30, 1983. They spent the first seven years traveling various places around the United States, enjoying skiing in the Rocky Mountains with friends and going to Brickyard 500 to cheer on Jeff Gordon. During the summers, you would find him at Oneota Country Club playing a round of golf and in the winters, playing Euchre with their card club friends. In the spring, he would be found in the basement of St. Ben’s mashing potatoes for the Knights of Columbus dinner. Tim earned his pilot’s license in 1992 flying locally and down to visit his sister, Tam, in Springfield, MO. He was always the tech guy helping with any electronic issues and found behind the video camera at all the Hageman Christmas celebrations.
Tim and Sue welcomed Mallory in 1990 and Leah in 1992. Tim and his family spent most summers camping from a tent to RV with friends that became family, often going on hikes, fishing, bike rides, playing baseball games, having water balloon fights, and telling campfire stories. Most winters, Tim and his girls would drive out to Colorado to ski, his favorite ski resort being Winter Park. As Mallory and Leah grew up, he was seen at nearly every Viking and Norse sporting event that they were involved in. He cheered on his girls and quickly befriended their teammates and families.
He absolutely loved traveling with Sue in his RV after he retired in 2017. The RV was his pride and joy. Tim always said “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey,” so taking the scenic route was the only option. Traveling out west was their favorite. They loved visiting the National Parks, spending winters in Florida, and they even took the RV through the streets of Boston to help move Leah and Jake. Beyond exploring the country, Tim enjoyed biking, watching the Cubs play, building things, and fixing anything for anyone. The slogan around the house was “Keep calm and let Tim handle it.”
He loved his grandchildren dearly, including the one that is on the way. He was always getting on the floor and playing with them, taking them to the park, eating Goldfish, video chatting and most importantly, taking naps with them.
Tim is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Sue; and their two daughters and their husbands, Mallory and Drew Helle and Leah and Jake Niedermann. He has four beautiful grandchildren who call him “Papa” - Hudson, Olivia, and Lucy Helle and Baby N. He is survived by his siblings Tamera (Dave) Jahnke, Terry (Pam) Broderick; his in-laws, Mary Lou Hageman, Tom (Denise) Hageman, Howard (Sandy) Hageman, Linda (Jim) Lukes, Lois (Cliff) Holthaus, Sam (Lisa) Hageman, and Roy (Patty) Hageman; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Alice Broderick and parents-in-law Conrad and Gertrude Hageman.
