Roger Arthur Meythaler, 86, of Ridgeway, Iowa, formerly of Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, went to his rest on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.

A graveside service will be held for Roger at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Ridgeway United Cemetery in Ridgeway with Garry Birth presiding. There will be a reception following the graveside service at Roger's home.

Roger was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on March 16, 1937, to Floyd and Elsie (Lukes) Meythaler. During high school, he enjoyed his time on the football team and in choral groups. After graduation, Roger considered careers in mechanics, electrical, and photography. Eventually, he decided to pursue a technical degree in television repair at DeVry University in Chicago, Illinois.

As a young man, his life was forever changed one day when he visited a relative at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. There he noticed an attractive nurse named Marilyn Aschim. Roger and Marilyn dated for about a year before marrying on June 8, 1958, at Marilyn’s family church, Ridgeway Lutheran. After a honeymoon at Wisconsin Dells, they made their home in Waterloo where Roger was employed as a television repair technician.

Roger and Marilyn were eager to build a family of their own. Eventually they moved to Cedar Rapids where they were blessed with the births of their four boys: David, Gary, Mark, and Glenn. Roger also owned and operated his own business, Roger’s TV, offering sales and service. During their years in Cedar Rapids, Roger and Marilyn enjoyed singing duets together and being part of their traveling church choir as well as participating in square dancing events. Roger also enjoyed his time as a bus driver for the Cedar Rapids school district.

Twenty years ago, in 2003, Roger and Marilyn sold their home and television business and moved into Marilyn’s childhood home on her family’s farmstead in Ridgeway. They enjoyed home and garden projects and involvement with their friends at Waukon Seventh-day Adventist Church in Waukon, Iowa.

Roger is remembered for his sense of humor, warm hugs, appreciation for cats and birds, love of camping, enjoyment of cooking, and for being “ornery as ever.”

Roger is survived by his four sons: David (Lois) Meythaler of Washington; Gary (Jennifer) Meythaler of Washington; Mark (Amy) Meythaler of Minnesota; Glenn (Jolene) Meythaler of Iowa. He leaves a living legacy of grandchildren: Micah, Emily, Isaac (Kalissa), Jesse, Hannah, Gavin, Brendan, Gretchen, and Kerstin. His siblings also remain: Howard (Shirley) Meythaler of California, and Rose (Cal) Kimball of Colorado.

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 NKJV
