OBITUARY.
MRS. FRANCELIA HAWLEY
On Saturday evening last at the home of her son Fran T Burdick in Britt, after an illness of only two days, Mrs. Francelia Hawley passed away. So quickly did death follow upon her becoming ill that Decorah relatives did not learn of her illness until the death message was received.
Mrs. Hawley’s maiden name was Francelia Tuttle. She was born on October 2, 1836, in Ansonia, Conn., and with her parents came to Freeport in 1854 or 1855. Here she met Gerry Burdick and was married to him in the spring of 1856. They went to Spring Valley to reside, the home continuing there until the close of the war. Mr. Burdick had gone through the war and returned to Fort Snelling to be mustered out, but he died while at the Fort. With her son she returned to Freeport to reside. In 1866 she was married to Daniel Hawley and in the course of a year they moved to Decorah and built the home now owned by Mrs. Dan Shea. Here they resided until the death of Mr. Hawley, which occurred in 1887. Mrs. Hawley continued to reside in Decorah until two years ago, when she removed to Britt to be near her son, realizing that with failing health life might not be spared to her for more than a short period.
During the earlier years of her residence in Decorah she joined the Episcopal church, but later transferred her relations to the Congregational church and at the time of her death retained her membership in the Decorah church. In her religious life she was an earnest Christian and in her duties as wife, mother and friend she was steadfast in her loyalty and devotion. Many friends extend to her son condolence in his bereavement.
The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at three o’clock at Britt, and the remains were brought to Decorah Monday afternoon for burial in Phelps cemetery. Dr Willett officiated at the grave and a large gathering of acquaintances and former neighbors were present to pay a last tribute to the departed.
