A PIONEER MOTHER DEAD.
Mrs. Ogden Casterton Passes Away Monday Morning Last at Her Home in This City.
In the death of Mrs. Ogden Casterton which occurred Monday morning, May 23d, at the home on Maple avenue, another vacancy was made in the ranks of the pioneer settlers of Winneshiek county. Coming to Highland township with her husband in 1856, they acquired a farm which remained as their home until about fourteen years ago, when they retired and came to Decorah to live. On that farm was started the nucleus of what has become one of the best fortunes in the county. There nearly all of their children were born, and shoulder to shoulder Mr. and Mrs. Casterton did the work that devolved upon the pioneer. Frugality and thrift marked their daily life and long before they chose to retire they had gained a competence that made it possible for them to help those about them. Mrs. Casterton’s death was not unexpected. She has been in a critical condition for several weeks and in failing health for ten years. Up to that time she had enjoyed splendid health, but a fall sustained while descending the stairs in the Goddard store made her an invalid during the latter years and she endued much suffering.
Mrs. Casterton’s maiden name was Mary Kew. She was born in England on Aug. 12, 1829, and just before coming to America in 1852 was married to Ogden Casterton. Their first home here was made in Illinois where they lived for three years prior to coming to Winneshiek county. Ten children were born to them and all are living. They are W. O. and Charles Casterton of Highland township, Emma J., (Mrs. Sam Halse), Florence, S. D., Ellen (Mrs. Isaac Fawcett) and Bertha (Mrs. A. R. Bryant), of Hesper township, Mary A. (Mrs. Thos. Ryan), La Crosse, Carrie, (Mrs. Fowler Humphrey), and Clara (Mrs. A. G. Humphrey), of Englevale, N. D., Nettie (Mrs. Granville Fawcett), Mabel, Minn., and Grace, (Mrs. W. E. Aiken), Ventura, Cal. All but Mrs. Halse, Mrs. A. G. Humphrey and Mrs. Aiken will be present at the funeral, which will be held at the Grace Episcopal church at 2 o’clock to-day, to join with their father in paying tribute to a faithful and devoted wife and mother. Rev McVettie will officiate and the remains will be interred in Phelps cemetery.
