John Fredrich William Brandt was born in July, 1841, at Schessinhausen, District Nienburg, Province Hannover, Germany. The days of his youth up to his 27th year were spent in the old country and there he was married to Sophy Mary Block. They left the old country and came to try their luck in the much praised country of America. The first years they lived in Clayton county this state, where they rented a farm, and later bought a small farm near Luana in 1888 that was sold and they bought the farm near Frankville where they have since resided. The marriage was blessed with 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls, of whom 4 boys in their delicate youth have passed away to a better home above. The remaining children are Anna, Mrs. Ziemann of Luana, Martha, Mrs. Ryan of Waukon, Magdalena, Mrs. Dreyer of Ossian, Maggie, Mrs. E. R. Birdsell, Ossian, Arthur, at home, Marie, Mrs. J. G. Birdsell, Ossian, and Walter and Cora at home. Mr. Brandt nearly always enjoyed good health until about three years ago, when he was attacked by the grip, and from that time on his health failed. He always had a desire to see the old country and the loved ones still living once more, so although in poor health yet he decided to make the trip to Germany. He left in April, 1907, and arrived after a pleasant voyage in May at the old home. The climate, the song of the birds and many other things the dear old country can grant made a powerful impression upon him and his relatives spared no pains to make his stay there as pleasant as possible. Under such circumstances and with the aid of a good physician his health improved so that at the end of June he returned in apparently good health. His long cherished desire had been fulfilled and he said, “Now I am ready to die.” It was not long until his chronic stomach trouble set in again and last fall became serious. He sought relief through different doctors but without success. He then visited the hospital at Rochester and there he was told there was no hope for him. After that he grew weaker week by week and day by day tenderly cared for by his dear wife and children, who did all in their power to ease his pain and give him comfort, until Saturday, April 2 at 5 o’clock, he quietly passed away. He attained the age of 68 years, 8 months and 17 days. His life was one of care and hard toil. May he now rest in peace. He leaves his true and faithful wife, eight children, thirteen grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his death. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Vornholt of the Salem Reformed church of Ludlow, assisted by Rev. Ziegler, with burial in the village cemetery. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the community in their affliction. To the friends who assisted them and to all who by acts of kindly sympathy and words of condolence made their days of sadness less painful to bear the family desire to extend their sincere thanks.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows his name as Freiderick Wilhem Johannes “William” Brandt. He was born July 15, 1841 and is buried in the Frankville Cemetery.
