Mrs. Z. B. Landon Dead.
Word came to Decorah early Tuesday morning that Mrs. Z. B. Landon, wife of postmaster Landon of Burr Oak, had passed away Monday evening while seated at the supper table. For several years Mrs. Landon has been a sufferer from heart disease and had recently passed through a severe illness as a result of the malady, but had apparently recovered almost her normal health. We are unable to give the details of Mrs. Landon’s life, time preventing us from securing them for this issue, but we can testify to the esteem in which she was so worthily held by a host of friends and acquaintances. As a school teacher in an early day at Burr Oak she had as her scholars many who are now men and women grown, with families of their own and in this association she won love that continued to the hour of her death. She was a woman of true Christian character who will be missed alike by old and young. For a number of years she has acted as correspondent for the REPUBLICAN at Burr Oak. She said she never wrote for those at home but for those who had gone away, but we know that one and all will miss her weekly letters for they carried with them that something of personal interest which was more than the mere news. Her last letter appears in today’s paper. It was written Monday afternoon and in it is reflected that good cheer which was characteristic of the deceased even when she suffered most.
It was only in September last that Mr. and Mrs. Landon celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. To the husband particularly and to the children as well will go out a world of sympathy in their bereavement. The funeral will be held at Burr Oak to-day at eleven o’clock.

OBITUARY
MRS. Z. B. LANDON
Emogene Slayton, daughter of Horace and Lucy Slayton was born at Springfield, New York, on March 16, 1833. She was left fatherless at the age of five years, and moved with her mother to Garretsville, Ohio, soon after. She applied herself to obtaining a common school education and began teaching at the age of sixteen. Afterwards she moved to Kent, Ohio, where she continued teaching until 1859, when she was married to Z. B. Landon, moving immediately to Kentucky. From there they moved to Iowa in the fall of 1860. After one year spent in Burr Oak they moved to a farm near town, where they lived until the fall of 1896, when they moved back to town where they have since lived. To them were born three daughters,--Mrs. Lida Pollitt, Mrs. Mary Porter and Mrs. Alice Price. These, together with the husband, fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren, remain to mourn the loss of a good wife and mother. She was converted at the age of twenty-five and joined the Methodist church in the state of Ohio, and until called to the life triumphant remained a most devoted and faithful member. She was always to be found in Sunday school and church work, a singer, a leader, a teacher,--and many times walked long distances in order to attend to her church duties.
On December 20th, 1909. Having apparently recovered from a late illness, Mrs. Landon heard the summons, “Child, Come Home!” and without a struggle was with the Lord and master.
She was a woman of very pronounced character, a faithful wife and mother, but most of all a devoted Christian. Around the later hours of her life gathered the gold sunset of a perfect day, and death was but the opening of the door to the blessed eternal day.
