The following article taken from the Moody County Enterprise will be of interest to friends and acquaintances of the late John Kirkland, who grew to manhood in our little village: John R Kirkland, of Trent, died at his home farm two miles east of that place Monday, Sept. 27. Mr. Kirkland had not enjoyed good health for some time. Recently he had serious intestinal trouble and died from this cause. Mr. Kirkland was born April 10, 1854, in Northeast Pennsylvania, and was 55 years of age. He came west in pioneer days, located in Blnsmon township and has lived there ever since. He was united in marriage in 1884 at Freeport, Iowa, to Miss Sarah Hallman, from which union one son was born. Mr. Kirkland is survived by his wife, son, father (who is 86(?) years of age), one brother, George, and one sister, Mrs. Linda Coughlin. The deceased was highly respected neighbor, a kind husband, an indulgent man and a man of unquestioned integrity—one who will ever live in the memory of all who knew hm. The funeral took place from the pleasant home of the deceased under the auspices of Flandreau Lodge, A. F. & A. M., of which order Mr. Kirkland had been a member. At the house the services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Doherty of Flandreau, who offered prayer and a brief but impressive sermon. Appropriate music was also rendered. At the cemetery the Masonic lodge took charge. W. A. Harris, Worshipful Master, read the services, assisted by Asa Loucks, W.A. Simpson, acting as marshall. The procession from the house to the burying grounds was a long one, showing the great respect in which deceased was held as a neighbor and up-right citizen.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Sunny Side Cemetery in Trent, SD
