OBITUARY.
William Martin Barthell was born in Onsbach, Bavaria, Germany, on Nov. 3,{?} 1823. He came to the United States in 1847 and in 1851 to Glenwood township, Winneshiek county, where he started a store. In 1866 he came to Decorah and this has since been his hime{sic}. In 1855 he was married to Miss L. McCue. He was the father of nine children, five of whom survive him. They are Mrs. Fred Tillotson, Herman Barthell, Charles Barthell, Dr. John F. Barthell and Walter Barthell. Dr. John Barthell is living in Winfred, S. D., and Walter Barthell in Texas, having returned there only two weeks ago. Mr. Barthell has been very feeble and has been losing control of his mental powers for the past year. During the past two weeks his condition has been critical, and yesterday morning at 4:30 o’clock he passed away. His early residence in the county placed him among the ranks of the first pioneers. He was naturally frugal and saving, and in his younger years amassed considerable wealth which he invested judiciously.

Transcriber’s Note: Hid gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows he was born Nov. 13, 1823 and died Sept. 29, 1909.
