THE SILENT REAPER.
Death Claims Several Old Residents During the Past Week.
ALEXANDR J. McCLASKEY
The death of Alexander J. McClaskey, which occurred Saturday evening just before midnight at his home on east Water street, removed from Decorah one of its most widely known citizens. As landlord of the old Winneshiek hotel for more than a score of years he gained a wide acquaintance and made the hotel a desired stopping place, especially for commercial travelers who wished to spend Sunday in congenial company. This he did in the face of the fact that the house was old and lacked many of the conveniences that later day standards demand as necessaries. When he disposed of the property several years ago he retired to private life, but not to be forgotten by his many acquaintances formed during his years of activity.
Mr. McClaskey was born Feb. 18, 1842, in Adamsville, Crawford county, Pa. He came to Iowa when a boy and when still under age enlisted in Co. K. First Iowa Cavalry. In 1871 at Waukon he was married to Louise Mason, and in 1877 they moved to Decorah where their home has since been. Besides his wife he is survived by their only daughter (Mrs. F. W. Haase), two sisters (Mrs. Helen Clark of Waukon and Mrs. Frances Wells of New Mexico) and his brothers William of Decorah and George in Colorado, also one son, Frank McClaskey, by a former marriage.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the residence, Rev. Wn. McVettie officiating, and interment was made in Phelps cemetery.
The cause of death was enlargement of the liver following a gradual breaking down of health, extending over two years.
