AN UNFORTUNATE AFFAIR.
Wm. A. Jennisch Taken to Knoxville and Died Three Days Later.
On Thursday last Wm. A. Jennisch was taken to Knoxville by Sheriff Qualley and Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock a telegram was received, announcing his death earlier in the day. The cause of his death was acute alcoholism.
So many stories have been current regarding this matter that we deem it only just to all concerned to give the facts as we have been able to secure them. Mr. Jennisch objected strenuously to being taken to Knoxville and attempted to escape from the sheriff while the train was being turned just prior to leaving Decorah. It became necessary to place him in irons and this Sheriff Qualley did, with the assistance of three others, namely Constable Luther Reed, N. N>=. Quandahl and Elling O. Vold. At Calmar another pair of handcuffs, allowing Jannisch more freedom for his hands, were substituted for the first pair. No further trouble was experienced by Sheriff Qualley during the trip to Knoxville and after leaving Cedar Rapids, where the night was spent, no handcuffs were used.
The stories which have been told have caused the relatives to feel that undue violence had attended the transfer of the unfortunate man to Knoxville, but these facts, which were secured from independent sources, do not indicate that such was the case.
Mr. Jennisch was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Jennisch and was born in Decorah Oct. 14, 1861. Upon approaching manhood he learned the blacksmith trade in his father’s shop and became very proficient. After his father’s death he continued the business with success. On Nov. 15, 1898, he married Elizabeth Holland. One daughter was born to them, who with his mother, H. J. Jennisch, and Mrs. B. J. McKay of Decorah, Mrs. F. D. Hutchinson of Sioux City, and Mrs. Carl Goodwin of Iowa City, brother and sisters of the deceased survive.
The remains were received from Knoxville yesterday afternoon and the funeral was held to-day. Mr. Jennisch was a man of kindly disposition, generous to a fault and his own worst enemy.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he died July 19, 1909 and is buried in St. Benedict Cemetery.
