Ellen Thompson

Funeral services for Ellen Thompson were held Thursday, August 4, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Reverend Dave Lenth officiated, Marlys Hager was the organist. Casket Bearers were: Randy Gunderson, Alan Gunderson, David Svendsen, Larry Svendsen, Leon Bachelder, Phil Richert. Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery, rural, Castalia, Iowa.

Ellen Marie Thompson was born September 26, 1927, at home in Winneshiek County, near Castalia, Iowa, to Johannes Svendsen and Anna (Mickelson) Svendsen. She passed away Monday, August 1, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa, at the age of 77 years.

She attended both the Castalia High School and the Postville High School and graduated from Luther College. On July 30, 1948 Ellen was married to Harley Thompson in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa.

To this union, a daughter, Jean Frances, and a son, Wayne, was born. They lived in the Frankville area. Ellen taught Elementary School for 49 years. She enjoyed her family, working with her flowers, and liked to go fishing.

She is survived by her husband, Harley, her son, Wayne Thompson, Suwanee, GA, a granddaughter, Amy (Ron) Rudnicki, Winter, WI, two great grandchildren, Alexis and Jacob Rudnicki, a sister, Mildred Breitsprecher, Ossian, a brother, John E. Svendsen, Castalia, Iowa, two sisters-in-law, Clarian (Dean) Gunderson, Postville, and Lavanda Richert, Decorah and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Frances, three sisters, Esther Svendsen, Lillie Zweibohmer, and Arlette Bachelder, and four brothers, John, who died in infancy, Reuben, Arthur, and Norman.

She was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA in Castalia and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, a retired teachers organization.
