Charlotte Walby

Funeral services were held Monday, November 30, at the Frankville Community Church for Mrs. Alwin Walby, who passed away November 27. The rites were conducted by Lloyd Sorenson, pastor of the Community Church. Burial was in the Frankville cemetery.

Charlotte Walby, daughter of Adolph and Nellie Hastings Peck, was born in Winneshiek county on May 9, 1896, and passed away at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville on November 27, 1964, at the age of 68 years, six months, and 18 days.

Mrs. Walby lived all of her life in this vicinity, attending elementary school in Winneshiek county and then graduating from the Waukon high school.

On August 30, 1917, she was united in marriage to Alwin Walby in Decorah, and together they began to farm in Frankville township. Four children were born to this marriage; the first was Dorothy, Mrs. George Waters of Canton, South Dakota; Lester of Washington, Iowa; Leland of Postville; and Doris, Mrs. Lyle Ellis, of DeWitt, Iowa.

Mrs. Walby is survived by her husband, Alwin; their four children; one sister, Helen, Mrs. Martin Lucich, of Hood River, Oregon; two brothers, Hartley Peck of Tallahassee, Florida, and Elmer Peck of Bakersfield, California. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Roy; and two infant grandchildren.

She was a member of the Frankville Community church all of her life and active in the affairs of both the church and the community right up until the time of her recent illness. She served in many capacities in the church including Elder, Sunday School superintendent, director of Christian Education for many years, several terms as president of the women's work of the church, and also church treasurer.

In Community affairs Mrs. Walby was a 25-year charter member of the Frankville Study Club. She was a 52-year member of the local Women's Christian Temperance Union and also Winneshiek county president. She recently was active in the organization of a local LTL group, which is an auxilliary of the WCTU for children. She also taught school for 15 years.
