OBITUARIES
MRS. JOHN VAN PELT.
Lomartia L. Gilson was born in 1822 in New York state where she resided until she was ten years of age, going then with her parents to Ohio, where in 1840 she was married to John Van Pelt. They continued to reside in Ohio for several years, then moved to Freeport, Illinois, where they lived until the fall of 1853, when they came to Winneshiek county, settling in Sec. 3, Decorah township, on Nov. 25th of that year. Their home has ever since been in and near Decorah. Some fifteen years ago Mrs. Van Pelt suffered a stroke of paralysis which left her more or less helpless for the balance of her life. Five weeks ago she was compelled to take to her bed permanently and she gradually grew weaker until Friday last when the end came at 3:30 in the morning. During the past year she made her home with her son Willard, where she was tenderly cared for. Her husband died last October. Beside her son she is survived by a daughter living at Sioux Falls. The funeral was held Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. Rev. W. E. Van Buren officiating, and the remains were taken to the Russell cemetery in Canoe township for burial.
