DEATH’S HARVEST LARGE.
FOUR OLD SETTLERS PASS TO THEIR LAST REST.
AN UNUSUAL WEEK’S RECORD
Mrs. Wm. Beard, Thos. M. Hoyt, Heber Robinson, Andrew Williams were Pioneers—Miss Inez Schanck Dies at West Union.

THOMAS M. HOYT.
Thomas M. Hoyt, one of the pioneer settlers at Freeport, died Monday morning at about six o’clock, at the home of E. W. Hoyt in this city, aged 84 years and 3 days.
Mr. Hoyt was born on April 17, 1824, at Ridgefield, Conn., where on Oct. 16, 1845, he was married to Henrietta C Edmond. They continued to reside in Ridgefield until 1853, when they came to Iowa and located at Freeport, where they resided until 1880 when they came to make their home in Decorah. Four children were born to them. Two died in infancy and one daughter—Bella C.—died in 1870., leaving their daughter Alice (Mrs. E. W. Hoyt) as the only surviving descendant. The wife and mother died in 1890.
During his early manhood Mr. Hoyt joined the Methodist church but after coming to Iowa he affiliated with the Congregational church being a regular attendant upon services until the infirmities of age intervened. By occupation he was a carpenter and bridge builder and many of the early local structures of this character were built by him. During the war Mr. Hoyt was a member of Co. D, 6th Iowa Cavalry, and saw service in the campaign against the Indians in North Dakota, under the late Capt. T. W. Burdick.
For several years Mr. Hoyt has been in failing health although there were lengthy periods when he felt comparatively well and was able to be about and enjoy the association of his acquaintances. Late in the fall however he was confined to the house and his room, and for several weeks it had been known that death might come to him at any time, so that the final release was not unexpected.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the residence, Rev. M. Willett officiating.
In all respects Mr. Hoyt was a good citizen—one who was respected by his many acquaintances for his kindly nature and goodness of heart.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he died April 20, 1908 and is buried in Phelps Cemetery.
