Funeral services were held for John O. Thompson, 75, Decorah, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Mr. Thompson, a retired shovel operator, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, in Decorah.
The body lay in state at the First Lutheran Church from 12:30 to 2 p.m. before the funeral. Pastor Alvan Nelson officiated, with the Steine Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Organist was Mrs. Frederic Gjere. Mrs. George Howland was soloist. The floral committee was composed of Mrs. Dale Dietz and Mrs. Olive Novotny. Pallbearers were Walter Forde, Ernie Ask, Joe Swella, Leonard Dvorak, George Ellickson and Richard Henely.
Mr. Thompson was born Jan. 1, 1883, in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Ole and Anna Thompson. He was educated in rural schools in Glenwood Township. During World War I he was a member of the Armed Forces. On Aug. 18, 1929, he was married to Alice Gilbertson in Ossian. He worked for 33 years as a mechanical shovel operator for the county. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and belonged to the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, a son, James of Oelwein; and two daughters, Mrs. James (Ardis) Hislop, Sheboygan, Wis.; and Mrs. Harland (Norma) Nesset, of Cresco. Survivors also include three grandchildren.
