DEATH’S HARVEST LARGE.
FOUR OLD SETTLERS PASS TO THEIR LAST REST.
AN UNUSUAL WEEK’S RECORD
Mrs. Wm. Beard, Thos. M. Hoyt, Heber Robinson, Andrew Williams were Pioneers—Miss Inez Schanck Dies at West Union.

MRS. WILLIAM BEARD.
Sarah Maria Hammond was born in Pennsylvania, Dec. 6, 1825. While she was a girl the family moved to South Bend, Ind., and there she married William Beard. After a residence of nearly seven years near La Porte, in that state, they came to Iowa in the winter of 1852-3 and established a home that became happy and prosperous for a quarter of a century. They were pioneers in Frankville township, and secured a farm of two full sections, besides some outlying quarters. These were days of hard labor nd happiness to all members of the family. In 1878 the family moved to Decorah to reside permanently. This married life was broken in the fall of 1882 by the death of the husband and father. To this union there were born six sons and two daughters, Edward L. and Seth were born in Indiana. The latter (Seth) died in that state. Hammond A., Lewis W., Mrs. Angie M. Wilson, Emma E., Walter and J. Calvin were Iowa born—all now living except Walter who died in boyhood. To her character as a home lover and home keeper Mrs. Beard added a deeply religious nature. She experienced religion at the early age of twelve, and ever after lived her faith. She made no extravagant professions, but lived day by day the faith she professed. Her union was with a Presbyterian church, and removals gave her and Mr. Beard membership in three different churches of that faith before coming to the Congregational church of this city. She maintained a continuous relation to the Sabbath school wherever she lived until well past her half-century. She and husband were among the pioneer members of the Frankville church Her father’s family was a large one, consisting of eight. Three brothers and two sisters preceded her to the better land; and a brother and sister survive her. The latter were permitted to be with Mrs. Beard during the last week of her life. As her age indicates Mrs. Beard had enjoyed good health for nearly her entire life. The grim messenger came in the form of erysipelas, and for two weeks she was a great sufferer. In her rational hours she longed to go and be at rest For her there were attractions in the other land; her work was done! And her wish in this respect was gratified last Sunday. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Congregational church, Rev. Dr. Willett officiating, with the three sons (Edward, Hammond and Calvin) and three grandsons (Arthur Wilson, Will and Leonard Beard) serving as pall bearers.
