Lydia Felker Meader was born near Gardner, Me., Dec. 25th, 1815, and died in Hesper, Iowa, October 26th, 1906. She was united in marriage with E. E. Meader Jan 1st, 1836, and in 1837 the young couple came west and settler{sic} in southern Indiana. In the fall of 1850 another move west was made, and the family wintered in Fayette county, this state. In the spring of 1851 they came to Winneshiek county, reaching Hesper on April 12th, and established a home which they enjoyed together until Mr. Meader’s death Feb. 13, 1896. When the official survey of the line between Iowa and Minnesota was made the chief engineers of the surveying party boarded for a time at the Meader home. Sometimes chiefs of a different complexion would call at the door and demand something to eat, but poor “Lo” soon found that Mrs. Meader was a woman who would respond to an appeal much sooner than to a demand. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Meader has made her home part of the time at the homestead and part of the time with the children. About a year ago, while at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. A. Hiatt, she had a fall, from the effects of which she was confined to her bed until her release on the 26th. But during most of the time she was her bright, cheerful self and enjoyed visits from her friends, and gratefully acknowledged the loving care bestowed upon her by her children. Soon after the accident to his mother George E. Meader came from Lacrosse and has been in almost constant attendance upon her, and the other sons, Myron, Tuder and A. H., have done all that they could. But the dear mother has passed on, and while they can but rejoice at her release from suffering they will feel the loss of their opportunity of ministering to her who had been so much to them. For many years Mrs. Meader was a member of the Friends church, and of the W. C. T. U., being a great reader. She was well informed on most public questions and had positive opinions on political, as well as religious matters. The funeral service will be from the old home at her request, followed by service at the Friends church to-morrow, the 31st, at 2 p. m., Rev. H. C. Carter officiating.
