Louie L. Underbakke, well known Winneshiek County farmer, passed away after a lingering illness, Sunday morning, Jan. 12 at his home near Burr Oak, Ia. at the age of 78 years, two months and eight days.

He was born November 4, 1896, in Fayette County near Ossian, Iowa, the son of Lars and Marie Underbakke. At the age of 10, he and his family moved to the vicinity of Chester, Ia., where he lived about seven years before moving to Burr Oak township, where he resided until his death.

Louie Underbakke was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was united in marriage with Violet Wilbur Ward at her home west of Burr Oak on June 20, 1918. In August, 1918, he enlisted in the army and served in World War I.

In 1919, after his return from service, the couple engaged in farming and resided on the same farm their entire married life.

Mr. Underbakke suffered a severe stroke on December 24, 1970. For the past four years his wife and family have cared for him. Their children are: Maynard of Fountain, Minn., Opal (Mrs. Harold Smith) of Burr Oak, Ia., twins-Robert of Lenora, Minn. and Roberta (Mrs. Frank Sever) of Tower, Minn., Dale of Burr Oak, Ia. and Shyrlee (Mrs. Craig Hill) of Ellsworth, Ia. He is survived by 24 grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters: Bert of Rake, Ia., Melvin of Burr Oak, Mrs. Ella Reed of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Mrs. Agnes Wicks of Decorah, Mrs. Mae Ward of Ossian, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Knut, Elmer, and Gustav.

Mr. Underbakke was endeared to his children and grandchildren, and his entire life was a testimony of his faith in the risen Lord and exerted a strong influence upon the lives of loved ones and friends.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. David Ash and the Rev. Frederick Westbrook Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Burr Oak with burial in the Burr Oak Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were grandsons, Donny Smith, Dean Underbakke, Delon Underbakke, Eugene Underbakke, Louis Underbakke and Richard Underbakke.

Honorary pallbearers were Ole Albertson, Albert Erickson, Bernard Nash, Merle Smith, Paul Wanless and Brayton Whitney.

Mrs. Joyce Headington was organist and accompanied Maynard Stinson and Frank Waid of Cresco as they sang a duet.

Prayer service was held Tuesday evening at Olson-Fjelstul Funeral Home where funeral arrangements were made. The service was led by the Rev. Westbrook, and duets were sung by Emery Maschger and Carl Brandenberg of Decorah.
