Crabtree, Clarence Raymond 1893 - 1975

Clarence Raymond Crabtree, 82, life-long resident of Winneshiek County and well-known Frankville farmer, died November 27 at the Winneshiek County Memorial hospital following a stroke. He had been ill four weeks.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 30 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational) Church in Decorah at 2 p.m. The Rev. Ward Stephenson accompanted the soloists, Mrs. W.D. Willer.

Burial was in the Frankville Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene Stockman and Lester Van Wey, both of Frankville, Robert Koch of Decorah, and three grandsons, Daryl Crabtree and Gary Crabtree of Cedar Rapids and Walter Wagner of Decorah.

Arrangements were made by Olson-Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Mr. Crabtree is survived by his wife Ethel; a son, John Curtis Crabtree, 367 32nd St. Dr. S.E., Cedar Rapids and a daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Genevieve) Wagner, East Montgomery Street, Decorah; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren; one brother, Archie Crabtree, Cresco and a sister, Mrs. Lucille Miller of Waukon.

Clarence Raymond Crabtree was born January 1, 1893 in Bloomfield Township, the son of Arlo and Elma (Kneeskern) Crabtree. His mother's family were pioneer residents of Winneshiek County and were early settlers of Moneek.

He received his education in the rural schools. He served one year in France, from 1918 to May of 1919, during World War I and was commended for bravery in the care of the sick and wounded.

He was married June 19, 1919 at the parsonage of the United Brethren Church in Castalia. He farmed 40 years on the same farm in Frankville Township and also took an active part in community and church affairs. He was a long-time member of the United Brethren and Presbyterian Church, was president of the School Board of Frankville District No. 4 and also director for two terms and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for 15 years.
