Haugen, Norviel A. 1918 - 1975

Norviel A. Haugen, well-known Decorah man, died July 13 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital at the age of 57, following a lingering illness. Mr. Haugen had been a salesman most of his life following farming in his early years. He had worked for Reardon Produce 18 years, was employed at the Ben Bear Co. several years and finally at the Men's Shop in Decorah.

Pastor Albert E. Houts conducted funeral services at First Lutheran Church Tuesday at 2 p.m.before a capacity crowd of Norviel's friends and relatives. Music was furnished by Mrs. R.A. Haatvedt who played the organ and accompanied the congregation as they sang hymns. A native of Madison Township, he was buried there in the Madison Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were Marvin Hovden, Donald Hovden, Carmen Hovden, Paul Haugen, Donald Graves and John Regan. Funeral arrangements were made by Steine Funeral Home.

Mr. Haugen was born June 27, 1918, the son of Martin and Sarah Haugen. He received his education in the rural schools and was a veteran of World War II where he saw overseas duty in the Southwest Pacific theatre.

He was married to Irene Dahlen September 19, 1949 at Madison Lutheran Church. She survives as well as two sons, Michael Haugen of Decorah and Carleton Haugen of Straford, Ia., one grandchild and a sister, Mrs. Adolph Nordsving of Canton, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Gilbertson, who died in 1945; one sister and five brothers.
