Schissel, Urban Edward Sr. 1916 - 1972

A former Ossian resident, Urban Edward Schissel, Sr. of Chicago, Ill. died October 21 in Chicago of an apparent heart attack at the age of 56. Mr. Schissel was a practicing attorney and vice president and director of Midland Savings and Loan Association in Chicago.

Funeral services for Mr. Schissel were conducted by Father A.P. White at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Decorah on Wednesday, Oct. 25 with burial in St. Francis DeSales Cemetery in Ossian.

Pallbearers were Harry Cole, Richard Zahasky, Steven Hageman, John, James and Robert Schissel. Alan Sensor was organist, and Marlin Fretheim was soloist. Funeral arrangements were made by Olson-Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Mr. Schissel was born February 24, 1916 in Ossian, the son of the late John and Catherine Schissel of Decorah.

He served in the United States Navy from 1941-45 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Following his discharge from the service, he entered Loras College in Dubuque and graduated in 1948 with a BA degree. He continued his education at Georgetown Law School in Washington D.C. and was graduated in 1951 as an attorney. After graduation he was employed as claims manager for Kemper Insurance from 1951 to 1953 in Rock Falls, Ill., from 1954 to 1957 in Bettendorf, Ia. and from 1957 to 1965 in Memphis, Tenn. He was transferred to Chicago in 1965 as regional manager for Kemper and in 1969 was named vice president and director of the Midland Savings and Loan.

Mr. Schissel was a member of the Iowa and Illinois Bar Associations. His church affiliation was the St. Daniels the Prophet Catholic Church in Chicago and he was a K of C member in Memphis, Tenn. He also belonged to the Sierra Club.

Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Zogas, daughter of Mrs. Ann Zogas of Dearborn, Mich. and the late Mr. Zogas. The couple was married October 9, 1946 in Dubuque. Other survivors are two sons, Urband Edward, Jr., 511 Gregory Drive, Chicago Heights, Ill. and Thomas John at home at 5733 South Natchez, Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Neil Schissel and Cyril Schissel, both of Davenport, and Lee Schissel of Decorah, and one sister, Mrs. Harry (Alfreida) Cole, Decorah.
