Our community was surprised Monday to hear that Mrs. Wm. Shurtleff had died at the hospital at Independence. Mrs. Shurtleff has been very ill for a long time but was gaining for the past few weeks until Monday morning when she quietly passed away at nine o’clock. Lavina Hall was born Sept. 10, 1847(?), in Cattaraugus county, New York. Sept. 10, 1867, she was united in marriage to Wm Shurtleff who, with a sister in Illinois and a brother in California, survive her. One year after their marriage they moved to Kendallville where they lived until, on account of ill health, Mrs. Shurtleff was taken to Independence. When in good health deceased was a kind and loving wife and neighbor. She leaves a host of friends who sincerely sympathize with the bereaved husband. The funeral was held in the church at Kendallville last Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by Rev. Gammons of Cresco. Interment in Kendallville cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone photo in the Kendallville cemetery shows her year of birth as 1844 and her year of death as 1905 but since the paper was published in 1906 it is an obvious error. It also shows the spelling of her name as Levina Shurtliff.
