Joel Dayton Dead.
A telegram to the REPUBLICAN yesterday announced the death of Joel Dayton at Iowa City, where he and Mrs. Dayton have been visiting their son Charles and family since before Christmas. No particulars accompanied the message save that the funeral would be held in Decorah Sunday. The absence of all members of the family we are unable to gave any data of Mr. Dayton’s life. He has been a residence of Decorah and vicinity for about fifty years, engaging largely in farming and its associated pursuits. Since early manhood he has been a member of the Methodist church and was one of the leaders in the local church. He is survived by his wife and two children, C. H. Dayton of Iowa City and Miss Jennie Dayton of Decorah.

JOEL DAYTON

The remains of Joel Dayton were brought from Iowa City last Saturday and the funeral was held at three o’clock at the Methodist church, with interment in the Phelps cemetery. Rev. Hunt officiated and spoke from the first Psalm, drawing a parallel from the first three verses. Mr. Dayton joined the Methodist church at the age of twelve years, and for nearly fifty years he was a member of and held official position in the local church. During that time it had ever been his delight to be prompt in his attention to duty, not from a sense of duty, but because of the pleasure he found in serving the Lord. His was a cheerful hopeful nature, and he came to be known as the pastor’s friend.
Mr. Dayton was born in New York state Nov. 14, 1824, where he grew up and attended school until he was sixteen years of age. For some years thereafter he taught school there and also in Iowa. His early residence in this state was in Allamakee county, where he was elected and served for a time as county surveyor. In 1856 he came to Decorah and here his home has been for nearly fifty years.
In December, 1861, he was married to Martha Cameron in New York. Their son Charles and daughter Jennie were the result of this union and they with the widow survive to keep in loving remembrance a kind and affectionate husband and father.
The funeral services were attended by a large number of fellow church members, old friends and neighbors of the deceased. Among those from out of town who were present beside the immediate family, were J. C. Cochran of Iowa City, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dayton, Mrs. H. O. Dayton of Waukon, Mr. J. C. Davenport of Clear Lake, Miss Hattie Dayton of Preston.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Phelps Cemetery and was born in 1824.
