A memorial service for Merlin D. Emery will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Curtis Fox officiating. Military rites will be by Mabel American Legion. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Emery, 81, of Burr Oak, died Monday (Aug. 8, 2005) at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

He was born Dec. 3, 1923, in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, and attended rural school. In 1942, he entered the Army and served with the 37th Engineering Battalion in Belgium and France. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy invasion. In 1948, he married Elsie Davis; they later divorced. On Dec. 21, 1963, he married Delores J. Lovlien Quandahl, and they lived for 24 years in Waterloo, Iowa, where he worked as a truck driver for United Concrete. He retired in 1989. During his retirement, he was a custodian at Burr Oak Lutheran Church, and enjoyed deer hunting and wood crafts. He was a member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry (Chamberlain) of Nevada, Rusty of Spring Grove and Rod (Melissa) of Waterloo; three daughters, Terri (Jim) Richards of Alaska, Barbara (Paul) Bateman of Hubbard, Iowa, and Judy Harach of California; a stepdaughter, Kathy (Ricky) Ellingson of Decorah, Iowa; a stepson, Dennis Quandahl of Waterloo; three sisters, Betty Guhl of Jacksonville, Fla., Nel Ewing of Waterloo, and Beverly Berg of Davenport, Iowa; and two brothers, Jesse (Phyllis) and Arland (Annette), both of Mabel.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Friday at the church. His body was cremated.

Mengis Funeral Home of Mabel is assisting with arrangements.
