Harold "Simmy" Ernest Sims was born Feb. 10, 1919 in Granger, Minn., to Norman and Isabell (Reeves) Sims.

He moved with his family to St. Charles, Minn., 1926.

Harold Sims attended St. Charles High School and lettered nine times in sports and was elected captain of the football, baseball and basketball teams.

He met Olive Fretheim in 1940 and they were married Jan. 24, 1942 in Castle Rock, Minn. To this union, three children were born: Donald (died at birth); Jim and Kathy.

Harold Sims served in the U.S. Army and in World War II. He spent 143 days without relief as a reconnaissance Sergeant overseas during the following battles: Battle of the Bulge – Colmar Pocket, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Ruhr Pocket – covering areas of Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, a World War II Victory Medal and three Bronze Service Stars.

He was a member of the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977 and the Bernatz – Symonds American Legion Post #163.

Harold and Olive Sims moved to Decorah in 1946 and he started working for Thermogas in 1949. He retired in 1983, working for 34 years.

He loved to spend time at his place in Harper's Ferry, Iowa; fishing, relaxing and spending time with family and friends. He treasured the many years spent tending to his horses in Decorah. Harold Sims was also a member of the First Lutheran Church.
Harold Sims was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald, at birth and one brother-in-law, Bill Burdick.
