KITTIE ALICE GRIPMAN –was born in Allamakee Co., Iowa, March 11, 1874, and died in Decorah, Iowa, Jan. 22, 1895, aged 20 years and 10 months. She was married to William Elwick Oct. 22, 1891, and after so short a union Mr. Elwick mourns the loss of his young wife. She was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church on probation Feb. 15, 1889, and was received into full membership Sept. 15, 1889. She has continued her membership here over since, with the exception of nine months while residing in Sioux Falls. Mrs. Elwick had been failing in health for a year and a half. The same dreadful disease —consumption—which removed her sister just six months before, to a day, claimed Kittie. Her’s was a triumphant death. She looked upon his coming with joy. She dreaded not to enter his dark shadow, for the Shepherd was with her. The last morning of life upon earth she said, “Must I stay another day and night?” Realizing that a home was prepared and waiting for her, she was impatient to go, and doubtless knew the experience of Paul, when he said, “For me to live is Christ, to die is gain.”
“O! may we triumph so,
When all our warfare's past,
And dying, find our latest foe,
Under our feet at last.”
The funeral was held in the Methodist church, attended by a goodly number of friends. Her sermon was preached by Rev. F. P, Shaffer from 1 Cor. 15: 55: “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” Then all that was mortal was carefully laid away, awaiting the resurrection of the just. F. P. S.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in Phelps Cemetery; however, the years of her birth and death are one year off.
