Death of Alan Maconochie.
Sunday morning last R. P. B. Portman received a letter from St. Paul saying that Alan Maconochie was very low and that he had best go to him at once. For some months Mr. Maconochie has been suffering from an affection of the lungs which his friends feared might prove fatal. On Wednesday of last week he started to go to his duties as editor in the West Publishing Co.’s offices. The day was rather a blustery one and by the time he had gone two blocks he was so exhausted that a hack had to be called to take him back home. From that time he failed rapidly, until Monday morning, when the end came.
Mr. Maconochie was of Scotch parentage and came to this country from London about twelve years ago. A year later he came to Decorah and for several years thereafter he spent much of his time here. For two years he was a a{sic} law student in Mr. Portman’s office. Immediately after being admitted to the bar he went to St. Paul and became one of the editorial staff in the West Publishing Co. In that capacity he served the company altogether about four years. A year and a half intervened during which he was a resident of Montana,
Sept. 9th, 1890, he was married to Miss Kate Filbert, of this city, who, with their little daughter, survives him. The remains were brought to Decorah for burial this morning.
Mr. Maconochie was an unusually bright man in an intellectual way, and had perfect health been accorded him he would have made his mark in journalism, as he was possessed of marked capabilities in that direction.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1864 and died Jan. 28, 1895. He is buried in Phelps Cemetery.
