Irene Schmitz, age 94, of Festina, IA, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, 2351 – County Road B32 in Festina, IA, with Msgr. Cletus Hawes presiding. Burial will in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in memory of Irene to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Irene Caroline (Hageman) Schmitz was born on August 9, 1918, the daughter of Felix and Monica (Holthaus) Hageman, near Calmar, Iowa. Irene attended St. Aloysius Catholic School. She was united in marriage to Edmund Schmitz on September 26, 1939, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa. Together they farmed south of Festina for many years. She was a busy farmwife and enjoyed cooking, gardening, visiting and playing cards. She also did a lot of mending of clothing and quilting. Irene enjoyed her family and spending time with them. Irene was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, where she was an active member.

Irene’s survivors include her son: Paul Schmitz, Mabel, MN. Two grandchildren: Curt Schmitz, Cresco, IA, and Kelli Schmitz, Winston – Salem, NC. Granddaughter-in-law: Lindsay (Dave) White, Albert City, IA. Former daughter-in-law: Marti (Marvin) Andera, Cresco, IA. One brother: Melvin (Helen) Hageman, Calmar, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Margaret Hageman, Calmar, IA; and Vonna Schmitz, West Union, IA.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents: Felix and Monica (Holthaus) Hageman. Her husband: Edmund Schmitz on November 10, 1973. One son: Gerald “Jerry” Schmitz on January 26, 2003. Two grandsons: Jon Michael Schmitz in infancy on January 4, 1985, and Jeff Schmitz on May 23, 2005. Brothers: Richard (Clara Mae) Hageman, Julius (Irene) Hageman, Carl and Gustave Hageman. Brothers-in-law: Joe (Felicia) Schmitz, Henry (Hilda) Schmitz, Leo Schmitz, Rev. Herman Schmitz and Nick (Margaret) Schmitz. Sisters-in-law: Adelaide Schmitz, Mary (Gust) Wieling, Angela (Marc) Bengfort, Dorothy Schmitz and Sister Catherine Schmitz, OSF.
