OBITUARY.
Mrs. Alva Tracy died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lewis Blodgett, in this township, at 1:30 o’clock, Monday afternoon, Dec. 20th, in her 80th year.
Phoebe Hutchinson was born in Tunbridge, Vt., Sept. 8th, 1818, and was married to Alva Tracy March 7th, 1843. Twelve years they lived together in their native state, and in 1856 they came west, settling first at Dover, Ills. Two years later they came to Iowa, secured a farm in Sumner township, where, after enduring the privations of pioneer life, they established a model farm home, in which they lived until 1877, when they came to Decorah. Alva Tracy died April 21st, 1893.
Deceased was the mother of five children—three sons and two daughters. The eldest son died in infancy, and the other sons died during the same week in 1875, of malignant scarlet fever. The two daughters—Miss Ade Tracy, and Mrs. Emma T. Blodgett—and seven grandchildren survive her.
Mrs. Tracy united with the Congregational church, in her Vermont home, when twelve years of age, and has always remained a steadfast follower of the Christian faith as it is held by that church. Deceased always possessed good health and up to midsummer this year was enjoying a serene old age. In July last, while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Blodgett, she fell on the doorstep, and met with a severe accident, in which her hip was fractured. Recovery at her advanced age was not anticipated, but to the surprise of all the bones knit, and she was well advanced toward permanent restoration, when on Wednesday last a cold settled into pneumonia, and death ensued on the following Monday. Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. L. Blodgett yesterday, Rev. Dr. Willett officiating. A devoted Christian, a faithful wife, and a loving mother has gone to her long home.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows her name spelled Phebe.
