Pioneer Dies at West Union.
West Union, May 1.—Prof. S. S. Ainsworth died at his home in West Union on Friday, April 28, at 2:30 p. m., in his eighty-third year. Prof. Ainsworth was born at New Woodstock, Madison county, New York, Oct. 18, 1816. The deceased was educated in the public schools, afterward taking an eight year course in Hamilton university, where he fitted himself for the ministry, being connected with the Baptist denomination. In 1856 he came to West Union, Iowa, where he has since resided, devoting most of his time to teaching, in which he was very successful. He always took a great interest in all scientific and public questions of the day and was exceptionally well informed on all of them, He was of a genial, kindly disposition and a great favorite in social and literary circles. He was married in 1845 to Miss Frances Douglass in New York, who died in 1853, leaving two children, James D. Ainsworth, a newspaper man in Denver, Col., and a daughter who died when about 10 years old. He was married again in 1860 to Miss Mary A. Hawkins, who survives him. Three children were born to them, two dying in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. C. G. Jones, living in New Jersey. Both his children were present at his funeral which was held at the M. E. church in this city on Monday, May 1, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity of which he had been a member for about fifty years.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in the West Union Cemetery.
