Monday last, M. L. Blackmarr received a telegram announcing the death of his father, Edwin Blackmarr, at the home of his son B. D. Blackmarr in Salt Lake City, Saturday last. The news was not entirely unexpected as a letter had preceded it only a short time saying that the old gentleman was very ill and but little hope was entertained for his recovery.
At this time the fullest facts concerning Mr. Blackmarr are not obtainable, but many of the most important ones are no doubt contained in Alexander’s History of Winneshiek County from which we quote:—
E. Blackmarr, retired farmer, was born in 1819, (Jan. 14th,) in Saratoga Co., N. Y. In 1835 he removed to Huron Co., Ohio, and was engaged at farming there until 1850; he then moved to DeKalb Co., Ind.; remainded{sp} there three years; then came to Io., locating in this Co. In 1854 he bought land in Hesper township, on what is known as Looking Glass Prairie. In the following year he moved to the village of Burr Oak, and conducted what was known as the Burr Oak House one year; then returned to farming, which he continued until he sold out in 1866, and again moved to Burr Oak and engaged in the mercantile business, carrying general stock. He remained in this business nine years, sold out in 1875 and retired from active business. Mr. B. was postmaster several years, has filled various offices in the tp., and is one of its most respected citizens. He was married in 1840 in Huron Co., Ohio, to Miss A. Washburn, and they have four children, Louisa, (Mrs. O. H. Benedict, of Kansas;) Byron, (of Salt Lake City;) Oliette, (Mrs. R. H. Thomson, of Chicago,) and Melvin, (of Decorah.)
To the foregoing may be added that the exact date that Mr. Blackmarr came to Winneshiek county was June 25th, 1854, thus making him among the earliest pioneers. In early life he joined the Friends church, but later became a Unitarian. His wife died Nov. 8th, 1880.
The remains are expected to reach Decorah to-day and will be taken to Burr Oak for burial beside those of his wife.
