George W. Russell was born in Green Co., Illinois, on December 9th, 1830. He came with his parents to Fayette Co., Iowa about 1849. Five years later he moved to Canoe Township, Winnesheik Co., and settled where he has since lived.
He and Miss R. Lydia Wertz, were married in 1866. To them were born three children, one of whom is dead the other two, Mrs. Mary Brant and Mrs. Ella Stortz, are living and were present at the funeral. One brother, Alexander Russell, two sisters, Mrs. Giles and Mrs. Crafts, together with the widow, remain to mourn his departure.
Mr. Russell entered the army during the civil war, October, 1861, and was mustered out the following July. He was in the 13th Iowa Infantry, was in Sherman’s command, and participated in one or more engagements,
For some years the deceased has been in poor health, but his failure has been gradual. He ate with the family on Tuesday and died at 2 o’clock, Thursday morning, the 22. The funeral conducted by Rev. J. W. Allen, was held at the home on Friday. A good number of neighbors and friends were present.
