Dr. Chauncey Willard Amy died at his home on Broadway in this city, Monday evening, Jan. 29th, from pneumonia.
The deceased was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. John Amy and was born April 12th, 1842, in Kirland, Lake Co., Ohio, coming to Iowa in 1857 when he was a young lad, and residing at Fort Atkinson. In the spring of 1860 when Pike’s Peak was the Mecca of many who determined to try their fortune at mining he joined the throng and was a resident of Colorado when the war broke out. Here he enlisted and Dec. 6th, 1861, became a member of the Second Colorado Cavalry, campaigning through the southwest under Gen. Blunt and Kit Carson. He had the good fortune not to be wounded in battle, but he received an injury by being thrown from his horse, that he carried with him through life. He returned to Decorah during the winter of 1864-5 and was engaged in school teaching hereabouts and in central Iowa for several years, meanwhile studying medicine and in 1879 graduating from Rush Medical College, Chicago. On March 28th, 1881, he was married to Dr. Harriett Bottsford and together they continued the practice of medicine here until 1886 when they went to Nebraska. After a residence of nine years in that state they returned once more to Decorah. Just prior to their removal here Dr. Amy suffered from a severe illness of a number of weeks’ duration and from that time until his death he was an invalid. One daughter was born to Dr. and Mrs. Amy, and she with the widow and two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Williams, of Syracuse, Neb., and Mrs. J. A. McKinney, of this city, survive to mourn his death.
Dr. Amy was a charter member of Decorah Camp, M. W. A., and his is the second death to occur among the camp’s membership.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at the residence at two o’clock, Rev. Mahlon Willett officiating, and will be under the direction of the Woodmen.
