Our community was grieved to-day (Tuesday) on the receipt of the news of the death of our old friend H. Tower who went some time ago to Excelsior Springs, Mo., for treatment. He had been a severe sufferer for some time from a complication of rheumatism and kidney trouble. Mr. Tower will be sadly missed, as he was an old settler, and besides being a man of honor was a most obliging and kind neighbor with a heart large enough to hold a vast amount of humanity. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, the 31st, at 1:30 o'clock, at the Methodist church at this place. The service will be under the direction of the Masonic fraternity, of which order he was an honored member. Interment will take place at Palmyra, Wis.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Hillside Cemetery in Palmyra. His gravestone shows his date of birth as Aug. 17, 1827.

OBITUARY.
(Fort Atkinson Times;)
TOWER—At Kansas City. Mo., January 29th. Hannibal Tower, at the age of 73 years. Funeral services occurred at the M. E. church in this city Wednesday, Jan. 31st, REV. C. A. Parkin officiating.
Mr. Tower was born at Rutland, Vt., Aug. 27th, 1827, and resided there until after his marriage to Miss Polly E. Potter, which occurred January 1st, 1851. He moved to Palmyra, Wis., in 1855. While residing at Palmyra the great struggle between the north and south occurred and Mr. Tower was one of the first to enlist, going right to the front and seeing much of the hardest part of the war. After his first discharge he returned to Palmyra and raised a company, received a commission as captain and commanded the company until the close of the war in 1865. In 1869 he moved to Fort Atkinson and was prominently connected with its business interests and advancement until the time of his death.
He leaves a wife and two children (Noel Tower of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Ace Webster of Waucoma,) to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father, all of whom were with him at his death.
The message which brought the news of Mr. Tower's death was received Tuesday morning, and caused a feeling of sadness to prevade this entire community. Cap. Tower, as he was familiarly called, was one of our most progressive citizens, always ready to help any enterprise that was a benefit to the community, and had many friends here, all of whom remember his pleasant, kindly way and many acts of kindness. Mr. Tower was a man of strong convictions and always took an active part in city and county politics. He was our postmaster for twenty years, and will be greatly missed by the entire community, who extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones.
Mr. Tower was an ardent Mason, a member of Cope Stone Lodge No. 316, A, F. A. M., of Calmar, Iowa, and King Solomon Chapter No. 35, R. A. M., of Decorah, Iowa.
The remains were taken to Palmyra, Wis., for interment.
