THE WORK OF THE REAPER.
MRS. A. J. CRATSENBERG.
Last Sunday afternoon and Monday morning the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Cratsenberg were surprised and grieved as the news came to them of the death of Mrs. A. J. Cratsenberg, of Burr Oak. It was an event that had been regarded as possible, but in the last few weeks hope had been revived, and fears of immediate danger had been partially allayed. She had been an invalid for upwards of two years, but not until six months ago was her case considered critical, and she had become confined to her home.
Julia M. Phelps was born in Martinsburg, Lewis Co., N. Y., Feb. 7th, 1834, and married A. J. Cratsenberg March 25th, 1851. The following eighteen years of their married life were spent in Lowville, N. Y., and in April, 1869, they came to Iowa and located in Burr Oak, where the family has since resided for thirty years. She was the mother of five children, one of whom died at Burr Oak in 1870, in her twefth{sic} year. The surviving children are A. A. Cratsenberg, of St. Paul, Mrs. Lewis B. Whitney, of Decorah, Miss Alma and Frank Cratsenberg, of Burr Oak. Two brothers—Lewis C. Phelps, of Southfield, Mich., and Charles M. Phelps of Washington, D. C.—also survive her.
Mrs. Cratsenberg was of a thoroughly genial disposition, a home lover and home maker; one of those whom her husband and children will regard over as the dearest and best friend they ever possessed. She loved her friends and these were not few. Blessed will be her memory to all of them
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Wm. Cummings officiating. The presence of an unusually large body of neighbors testified the regard felt for deceased and her family by those with whom she had lived for almost the lifetime of a generation.
