Killed in an Elevator,
Word was received in Decorah last Friday that Miss Mabel Preston, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Preston, formerly of Decorah, had been killed in an elevator in a building In Chicago. We are not informed as to the particulars of the accident. Mr. and Mrs. John Telford went to Mason City, where Dr. Preston is now living, Saturday last, to be present at the funeral. Miss Preston was in Chicago taking the course in one of the hospitals as a trained nurse.
A dispatch to the Des Moines Capital from Mason City gives the following details of Miss Preston’s death
Mason City, March 5.—More details are at hand regarding the death of Mabel Preston, the second Iowa girl to lose her life by accident in the city of Chicago within the last few weeks. Miss Preston was studying to be a trained nurse at Michael Reese hospital and met death in an elevator shaft in that institution last Thursday. She had just completed her rounds upon the top floor of the hospital and was waiting for the elevator. She stepped upon a small platform at the side of the shaft and looked down to see where the elevator was, when the 700-pound weights used to regulate the car descended swiftly and struck the girt on the head, pressing it down and breaking her neck. Death was instantaneous, but it was not until fifteen minutes later that the girl’s body was found Miss Preston would have graduated from her training course next June. She was 23 years of age and was a graduate of the schools of this city.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery and was born in 1878 and died Feb. 28, 1901.
