Yesterday afternoon at 3:30 p. m. Mrs. Anna. P. Johnson Spilde died at the home of her son Hans P. Johnson, after an illness of two years and a half. Mrs. Spilde was born in Bergen, Stift, Norway, Sept. 11, 1819. Early in the forties she was married to Paul Johnson Spilde, and they came to America in 1859, reaching Canoe township, in this county, on the 3d of July of that year. Here they purchased land and made their home. In 1864 Mr Spilde was drafted into the army. While there be suffered mental derangement and escaped from the hospital at St. Louis, never to be heard of again. In the fall of 1880 Mrs. Spilde came to Decorah with her son and here she has remained. In July, 1898 the first symptoms of illness made themselves manifest. Gradually the disease, which was of a paralytic nature, crept upon her and she required constant care. This was lovingly bestowed by Mr. Johnson, who, during all his life, has never been separated from her to exceed a year. Last June she became bed-ridden, and since that time she has suffered greatly, but during the less painful moments her thoughts would turn to spring and summer when she confidently expected to be able to sit on the porch and enjoy the balmy breezes and the beauties of nature. Of nine children eight survive to revere the memory of one who was always loving, kind and good. They are Hans P Johnson, Decorah, John and Lars Spilde. of Canoe township, M. P. Spilde, of Northwood, Iowa, Mrs. Anna Severson, of Northern Minnesota, Mrs. Seim and Mrs. Bolkan, of North Dakota, and Mrs. Wold, of South Dakota.
The funeral will be held next Monday afternoon. Brief services will be held at the house at one o’clock, followed by services at the First Lutheran church at two o’clock.Source: Decorah Republican Jan. 31, 1901 P 3 C 3
—The funeral of Mrs. Anna Johnson Spilde was held last Monday and was largely attended. In regard to her husband a slight error was made in our obituary last week. He was confined in a hospital at Louisville, Ky. and not St. Louis.
