Lewis W. Updegraff, formerly of Hesper, died on the 20th inst.
From the Salem (Oregon) Statesman of the 23d we learn that L. W. Updegraff, a well known and highly respected resident of Winnesheik County for thirty-five years prior to 1893, was buried on the 22nd of December in the manner of the Friends faith. The Statesman publishes this obituary:—
Lewis Walker Updegraff was born near Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson county, Ohio, April 3, 1832. He was descended from sturdy Dutch Quaker stock, his ancestors being among the first immigrants who accompanied William Penn to America and who settled at Germantown Pennsylvania. His father, Nathan Updegraff, was a miller and in his early manhood he also followed that occupation. In 1858 he removed to Winnesheik county, Iowa, where in 1865 he was married to Mary Elizabeth Battey, and where he lived until he came to Oregon in 1893.
While in Iowa, Mr. Updegraff was actively engaged in farming, but after coming to Oregon he lived a retired life, owing to advancing age and failing health. For more than twenty years he had been afflicted with dyspepsia and insomnia, although less severely until about the time he removed to Oregon, where he came in quest of health. For a few years after coming to this state his health seemed slightly improved, but In July last his old complaints returned with added virulence and after that time, in spite of constant and the most skillful medical attendence, he gradually declined until death came on the 19th inst.
He was a brother of the late David Upedegraff, of Kansas City, Mo., and W. H. Undegraff, of Decorah, Iowa, now also deceased. Of his immediate family but one member remains—a sister, Mrs. Ann U. Kinsey, who still lives on the old homestead at Mount Pleasant, Ohio. Mr. Updegraff was a man of strict business integrity, of high moral purpose and a firm believer in the cardinal principles of Christianity, although not in his later years a member of any church.
He leaves a widow, Mary K, Updegraff, and three sons, Clermont B. Updegraff, Clarence L. Updegraff and Samuel B. Updegraff, all of this city, who mourn the loss of a devoted husband and kind father.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in City View Cemetery in Salem, OR.
