OBITUARY —Mrs. Caroline Allen, whose death occurred on Thursday, the 30th, and was mentioned in last week’s paper, was the daughter of Joel and Lois Battey, of Starksboro, Vt., where she was born Sept, 16, 1832. She was one of a family of eight children. James, who died here in the long ago, and Nicholas, whose home was also in Hesper, were her brothers, and Mrs. George Harkness, of Mabel, a sister, all long since passed away. The subject of this sketch moved to Iowa in June, 1857, was married to Benjamin F. Allen April 4th. 1861. Three children were born to them, two dying in infancy and one permitted to remain, a comfort to her parents for ten or more years, when she too was called hence. Mrs. Allen was a sufferer from inherited disease all her life, which suffering she bore with the utmost cheerfulness and resignation. She was a worthy member of the society of Friends, in which she was born and raised, her father having been a minister and her mother an elder in their Vermont home.
Words are too feeble to express the sympathy the whole community feels for the ever kind and patient husband who is left in feeble health to mourn his life companion. Well may he say with the Psalmist. “All thy waves and thy billows have gone over;” but may he feel that his loss, which will be only for a little while, is her eternal gain, and may the loving Jesus be his support and comfort.
Mr. Allen wishes to express his heartfelt gratitude to all those who so kindly assisted in caring for his loved one during her last illness, and prays that the Giver of all good may graciously regard them.
