OBITUARIES.
JOHN LAWRENCE.
John Lawrence, father of County Recorder Lawrence, died on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at his home at Navan, in his sixty-seventh year. He was one of the very early settlers of the county, having come to Old Mission in 1849, and later to Jackson township in 1852. He was born in Ireland in May, 1837, came to America when four years old, and previous to coming to Iowa lived in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Ohio. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. I, 9th Iowa, and served four years, and his death is directly traceable to this service. In 1870 when a post office was established at Navan he became postmaster, and so remained to the day of his death. In early days he was a member of the board of supervisors, and also conducted a saw mill on the Little Turkey. He is survived by his wife and seven children, three sons and four daughters. The funeral was held last Friday, and the remains were interred in the Waucoma cemetery. Rev. Frost of Waucoma preached the funeral sermon and the Masons had charge of the services at the grave. Mr. Lawrence sustained all the relations that devolve upon the good citizen.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born May 12, 1837 and died December 2, 1903.
