CARL GODFREY HEGNER.
One of Decorah’s esteemed citizens, better known to most acquaintances as Charles Hegner, died at his home on Maple avenue, this city, yesterday afternoon at about 4 o'clock. Death came to him after an illness that developed about two years ago, but did not become serious until last May, and only latterly has kept him at home.
Mr. Hegner was born in Nemitz, Saxony, April 28th, 1833, and came to this country when sixteen years old. After a residence of a few years in New York he came to Wisconsin, where in 1857 he married Miss Wilhelmina Bush. To them were born a family of five boys and four girls, all of whom except Ernest G. survive him, and reside as follows:
William Edward, at Birmingham, Ala.
Carl Lewis, at Atlanta, Ga.
Herman F. at Chicago.
Ida Elizabeth, at Chicago.
Caroline W. at home.
Mrs. Wilma H. Walters, now at home.
Mrs. Emma McNally at Dallas, Tex.
Robert Wilhelm, at Chicago.
In early life deceased mastered the cabinet maker's trade which, in connection with merchandising in furniture, he followed his entire life. When he came to Decorah in 1865 he became a partner with Charles Golz, who will officiate in the last funeral rites.
A beloved husband and father, and an esteemed citizen thus passes away. He lived a long and useful life. This community in which the active portion of his life was spent is the better for his residence with us. The family he nurtured to useful man- and woman¬hood is his highest honor.
The funeral will be held at the home on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone photo in Phelps Cemetery shows his first name spelled Karl.
