The people of our town were really shocked on Friday last to hear of the sudden death of Wm. King. He hadn’t been feeling well for quite a while, but was able to be around.. Friday afternoon, he being in great pain, Mrs. King went to a neighbor’s to get advice on what to do for him, and when she came back he laid on the floor almost gone. The funeral was held at the M. E. church, sermon by Rev. Dorcas. Four of the bearers were G.A.R. comrads K. D. Weldon, L. W. Bennett, C. O. Maltby and Wayne Donaldson, and citizens W. C. Reed and C. T. Brode. Wm. Henry King was born Sept. 29th, 1833, in New York state, and died at his home in Burr Oak, Iowa, Friday evening, April 24th, 1903, aged 69 years, 6 months and 25 days. He came to Iowa about a half century ago with his foster-father, and identified his fortunes with the new country. In the fall of 1858 he married Anna McCauley. Of this union were born three children, all of whom are living. In about 1877 his wife died. Then about fourteen years ago he married Martha Jewell. The last ten years of his life have been silent in the village of Burr Oak. Although not a professed christian he was a man possessed of many good qualities. When the Rebellion began the fires of patriotism burned in his bosom, and he enlisted In Co. F, 27th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Sept. 8, 1864, and served a short time in defense of his country. He was discharged May 16, 1865, by reason of an order by the Secretary of War to discharge all soldiers in hospitals. And again be it spoken in his praise that he was not addicted to strong drink. He was around town until a few days ago, but he had a frail body and ere we were well aware a little Illness bore him the way of all earth. The wife and children whom he has left behind have the sympathy of many friends.
