Brought Home for Burial
The remains of Joseph Bowland, who was for forty-three years a resident of this county, were brought to Decorah from Chicago Monday last for burial.
Mr. Bowland was born in England, Jan. 21, 1819, and died in Chicago last Friday, aged 84 years, 1 month and 20 days. He was married in Manchester Cathedral in October, 1844, and came to the United States in 1850. For six years he lived In Connecticut, and then removed to Iowa and occupied land on what he, with the Vines, Yarwoods and Wheatmans, gave the name of English Prairie. Twenty-five or more years he came to Decorah and lived until in 189{?} when he went to Chicago and found a home with his niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Atkinson. He leaves no direct descendants. There were many of us who knew and appreciated him as a kindly, genial old man, a lover of birds and flowers, who was most happy when at with and about plant growth.

Transcriber’s Note: Iowa Gravestone Photos show he is buried in Phelps Cemetery.
