Laura, oldest daughter of Walter A. and Samantha Smith, was born in Hesper township, March 4, 1862, and died in Hesper village. September 5, 1904. On November 21, 1881, she was united in marriage with Elihu T. Halsey, who with three sons and two daughters, are left to mourn the loss of a most devoted wife and mother. The writer has known Mrs. Halsey since she was a bright and winning girl of fifteen, attended a country school of which he had charge, and during all these years he has known naught but good of her. As a mother she reminded one of the saying in “Ben Hur” “God couldn't be everywhere, so he sent mother.” Of brothers and sisters who with the mother also remain. There are Mrs. Jas. Halsey, Mrs. H. C. Rowe, Mrs. John Rickert, Mrs. W. Griswold Robert, Frank and Charley Smith. They with the husband and children have the sincere sympathy of the entire community The funeral services will be held to-morrow at the Friends church. Elder Dick of the Advent church officiating.
