Mrs. Claiborne Day
Emma Parliman was born in Maine in 1839 and came to Decorah with her parents—Dr. and Mrs. William Parliman deceased—in 1857. In the same year she married Mr. Claiborne Day of the original pioneer family. Mrs. Day was a woman of strong impulses, having strong likings and dislikes, a lover of home and its influences, reserved in manifesting emotions, but warm-hearted and generous where she bestowed her affections. Children were denied her, but a grand niece came into her household during the winter and to her Mrs. Day gave an affection akin to a mother’s. Her illness was a brief one, and few knew she was ailing until the news of her death was circulated. Funeral services will be held from the home of the deceased at 2 o’clock this afternoon, Rev. M. Willett officiating.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in Phelps Cemetery and was born May 30, 1839 and died March 21, 1904.

—The obituaries of Mrs. Claiborne Day located her in Maine. This is an error. She was born in the town of Mogadore, Ohio, a place that contributed quite freely to the early settlement of Decorah.
